How Telehealth Physical Therapy Can Relieve Back Pain

As everything starts to open up again, many of you might still be hesitant about leaving your home.  This doesn’t mean that you can’t get the care you need. Telehealth connects you with a qualified physical therapist who can help manage your pain and get you back to your life.  One of the most frequently ignored issues is lower back pain.  We all suffer from the attitude of “it will just work itself out” especially when it comes to lower back discomfort.  It’s easy to say “I slept wrong, or I must have overdid it yesterday”.  But this can quickly turn from ignoring it for 1 day to 1 month.  Telehealth physical therapy can make it quick and easy to get professional help.  Evidence shows that the quicker you seek help, the shorter your recovery will be and the quicker you will find relief.  So, how does it work?

Elevate Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation uses secure, HIPAA compliant video conferencing to connect you with a physical therapist in your own home. All you need is a tablet, smartphone or laptop with an internet connection.

What will happen during your first telehealth visit?

  1. Assessment. At Elevate PTR we can do a thorough evaluation which includes a detailed account of your lower back pain and symptoms as you experience them followed by a movement/mobility, strength and function assessment. Telehealth is great for this because I can see first hand those activities which cause pain in your lower back or leg (for example, sitting at your desk, washing dishes, exercise).

  2. Patient Education. The findings of the assessment will be explained to you in a way that it applies to your everyday life.  This part is probably the most important because it will initially involve activity modification to break the low back pain cycle and avoid further injury or irritation

  3. Developing a plan of care.  After the above, we, yes WE will develop a plan of care that makes the most sense for your lifestyle.  Telehealth allows us to make a plan that fits into your schedule and routine. Making it convenient and easy to address your low back pain and symptoms.

  4. Specific corrective exercises, stretches, mobilizations.  Depending on Step 3, we will select a combination of the above that will directly address your specific symptoms, back pain and needs.  This could involve having a family member or friend help with certain mobilizations or stretches if needed to get the best outcome.
