Do’s and Don’ts of Sciatica
Sciatica refers specifically to injury or symptoms involving the sciatic nerve. The more global term is lumbar radiculopathy. The textbook presentation usually involves symptoms that travel down the back part of the leg and can include: numbness, tingling, and pain. Symptoms vary depending on the specific part of the nerve that is involved and the person’s daily activities. Like other types of back pain, lumbar radiculopathy can affect persons who perform repeated lifting, participate in weight-bearing sports, lead sedentary lifestyles, and have poor posture. Every person’s presentation will be unique to them and it is recommended you consult a physical therapist before engaging in specific exercises or return to training. In the meantime, here are a few do’s and don’ts to help manage the symptoms of sciatica.
DO
Change your position frequently
Try some short walks to help keep the spine mobile
Avoid excessive bending forward or any movement that increases your symptoms
Consult a physical therapist, even if it’s only a phone call
DON’T

Run or do high impact activities
Lift anything heavy or carry heavy loads
